Vendor Series - Part II

Facilitator - David Holdstock, Curt Hinton of Geographic Technologies Group

PAGG hosted another successful demonstration in support of the Society’s primary goal to educate and promote the use of GIS and associated technologies in The Bahamas. The event took place at the Breezes Hotel May 21st 2003 and was facilitated by David Holdstock, Chris Herrmann and Curt Hinton principals of Geographic Technologies Group (GTG) (www.geotg.com) of North Carolina.

PAGG is a Society of GIS enthusiasts who have, since its inception in September of 2001, been the conduit for getting the information out on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as the decision making tool of the 21st Century. With this aim in mind the Society launched its 2003 Vendor Series program by presenting an alternative to agencies that use H.T.E./AS400 platforms that may be seeking solutions to improve governance efficiencies and making that information available throughout their organizations.

Geographic Technologies Group is a business partner of H.T.E. (government software), ESRI (desktop mapping software) and Microsoft. GTG demonstrated the many capabilities of its suite of software called the Looking Glass Suite, which links GIS applications to H.T.E. Most data stored in H.T.E/AS400 platforms have a geographic component; meaning it can be referenced to a location on the Earth’s surface. Looking Glass applications act as a GIS portal to H.T.E., providing seamless integration for the display, query and analysis of spatial data stored in H.T.E.

Applications demonstrated included utility management, crime analysis, emergency dispatch, building permits and valuation applications. Another technology demonstrated was the touch screen GIS Kiosk which is considered to be a break through in allowing the general public, realtors, lawyers, government agencies like the Ministry of Public Works, the Utility Corporations, The Ministry of Tourism and other interested parties to rapidly and easily access GIS data at the touch of a screen. This is an exciting technology that peaked the interest of a number of participants at the demonstration.
